MUNDUM / MNDM
Earthquakes, with people in the picture.
Magnitude measures size. MNDM is a 0 to 100 score of estimated shaking exposure.

SELECTED QUAKES IN THE LAST 48 HOURS
REGIONAL ACTIVITY
30-day activity
USGS M4.5+ quakes in selected regions: the last 7 days compared with the preceding 23 days, using daily rates.
This snapshot is older than expected. Its colors describe the saved period; they are not current conditions.
All regions, one scale
Quakes / day
Select a region to locate it on the globe and see its counts.
Outside selected regions: 168. Events outside these regional boxes are counted separately and receive no trend color.
Colors describe recorded activity in selected regions, not safety or a prediction. Counts can change as USGS revises its catalog.
Regional updates every Monday at 09:00 New York time. Friday brings the week's top 5 by MNDM.
How the colors work
The expected 7-day count is the previous 23-day count × 7/23. At least 8 events in 30 days are needed for a color: red means a daily rate at least 1.5× the previous rate; green means at most the previous rate ÷ 1.5. Both also need a difference of at least 3 events from the expected count; otherwise yellow. Fewer than 8 events is gray. A zero previous count with at least 8 recent events is red, labeled new recent activity. Aftershocks are included. The chart compares counts per day: the last 7-day count ÷ 7 and the previous 23-day count ÷ 23. Every region uses the same horizontal scale, starting at zero. Surface colors cover the same regional boxes on land and ocean; unselected areas stay neutral.
HOW TO READ IT
A shallow M5 near a city can outrank a deep M7 at sea. MNDM combines size, depth and population in the estimated shaking footprint. It is a score, not a confirmed headcount.
Same green to red scale for magnitude and MNDM. Every Friday the bot counts down the week's top 5.
